A tragic train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel critical opposition regarding the rapidity and management of the country's key public works projects.
The disaster occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link developed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.
“We shall meticulously determine the cause of this accident,” stated the national leader.
The leader reported that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The official added plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those involved.
Flagship Project of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the former leader, whose term ended the year before. This rail line was a hallmark of his government's strategic goals for the southern region.
Another ambitious railway undertaking from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economic fortunes of a comparatively less developed part of the country.
Building Management and Risks Apprehensions
The building of both train projects was supervised by the nation's military, marking a significant increase of its role in civilian projects. They were completed at an accelerated pace, beating expectations to be partially launched before the end of that government.
However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously sparked persistent questions over operational security.
- Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This involves an previous crash this month when a train struck a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had several non-deadly derailments.
Appeals for Investigation and Halt
In the wake of the tragedy, the head of a key rival party called for an immediate suspension in the building and running of all comparable projects.
This pause was suggested while awaiting a comprehensive technical review. The party declared that the tragedy "demands prompt explanations."
In reaction, the president maintained that the train had been running in total accordance with all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the construction and running of these vital undertakings.
